Interviews

Uforia

Myself and four pretty chill guys make our way up from The Drake Underground to the campground-esque patio. Michael Ursini, singer and songwriter for Uforia, takes photos on his phone of people and things as we walk.

“He Instagrams more than a girl,” bass player and vocalist, Sam Morton, jokes.

This lighthearted banter continued throughout the interview with Adam Brik and Julien Bigras. These guys have a great dynamic offstage, and from what I had seen at Humber College in December, translated wonderfully onstage.  The guys easily convey different emotions physically and through their lyrics and instrumentals.

“The best thing about working with these guys is efficiency,” said Ursini, and the others agreed.

Ursini started a project back in April 2011, but the name Uforia was chosen in May 2012. The CD was originally recorded without Brik and Bigras. It was only at the end of recording that they found the completing members of the band.

“Adam and Julien actually came in at the same time. It was powerful, powerful stuff,” said Tony Malone, producer turned manager of Uforia.

It was a busy summer for Uforia. The guys practiced twice a week in the gritty hot summer to perfect the songs on their debut CD. They had their first show at The Drake on August 13th and have had free shows once a month since.  Their dedication to Uforia and drive will be a big component to how well they will do and their future as a successful band.

Their CD Imagining is available on their website, but it’s probably better to go to one of their free shows at The Drake and buy a physical copy. The live performance is energized from the bands head banging and jumping around onstage, seemingly sending that energy through the airwaves of their music.

The lyrics are a big part of the whole feel of Uforia. Ursini seems to conjure up these descriptive metaphors that, along with the instrumentals, make you feel you’re in some pretty intimate moments with him. In the track, Megan’s Dream, he writes:

Shortness of breath, closer to death, and I’m still in my ocean. Popping in my ears, all my darkest fears, turn me to lead, sinking to bed, and they’re all painted red.

The guys get together to make the eerie feel to the lyrics come out in instrumental by really discussing what elements each could bring to the song to create those layers and ultimately the sound they want.

“You get Adam on guitar, Julien on the drums, and me on bass and we each have a lot of talent. We play our specific parts and together it’s a powerful dynamic,” said Morton.

Ursini’s powerful voice along with Bigras, Brik, and Mortons demanding stage presence is hypnotic. Even as I would move from the Drake Underground to upstairs I could see people walking downstairs curious about the loud music they heard from the underground.

Ursini also plays solo at other venues in Toronto, sometimes with the help of Brik, and this is a way they get their music out there. He sells CDs and plays versions of Uforia songs, and often gets positive feedback from people that have heard him for the first time.

“When we all get together, the music that comes out is amazing. I’m really excited for the new year and I think people will really enjoy our music,” said Brik.

The guys got together recently to record three new songs, and hope to have a release party sometime in the spring of 2013.

“We’re talking about making a music videos, but that is all the detail I’m going to reveal about it for now,” said Ursini.“Next we’re looking to get on a record label, we won’t be playing free shows at The Drake for long!”
